Corinne here. For those of you who are new to the Canvas Weddings crew, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. For those of you who have been following along for awhile, welcome back. It’s been awhile.
As you may have noticed, the last blog post on this site was written in December, 2015 --- more than two years ago! A lot has happened in my life in those years, and now that Canvas Weddings is officially back open for business, I wanted to take some time to catch everyone up on where I’ve been, what I’ve been up to and how I got to where I am now.
I launched Canvas Weddings in January, 2012 while my husband and I were still living in Chicago. Not long after that, we moved to Madison, WI, and that was the first true “home” that Canvas Weddings had. From the amazing couples, barn venues and fabulous community of vendors, planning weddings in Madison was a dream. I spent three happy years with Canvas Weddings in Madison until September, 2015, when I moved with my husband to the Hudson Valley in New York. Even though I love our new East Coast home, I miss Madison, it’s people and its weddings often.
As our move to New York was planned well in advance of when we moved, I was able to spend a good amount of time pre-move considering what the future of Canvas Weddings would be --- whether I would immediately reopen the business in New York or consider alternate avenues of employment. After a lot of soul-searching, I decided to put Canvas Weddings to bed for a time, and instead I took a job managing events at a wedding venue in the Hudson Valley.
I spent a little over two years working at that venue, and in that time I learned a lot --- I spent a lot of time working on events of all kinds (weddings, corporate meetings, galas and more) and spent countless hours on food/beverage service, room layouts, staffing models, software implementation, and more. During this time I was also able to forge incredibly special relationships with many couples and their families and work alongside some of the greatest wedding and event vendors there are. As great as that work was, I found myself often missing my wedding planning work --- I missed being a part of the venue and vendor search, I missed designing and creating and dreaming with couples. Over time, these feelings grew and intensified, and I knew it was time to bring Canvas Weddings back.
Looking back on the last six years, I am so incredibly grateful for the two years that I spent away from Canvas Weddings. That might sound strange, and I certainly did miss it, but the time away has provided me with so much perspective and growth. While I’m so proud of the work I did with Canvas in Madison, time has given me clarity on the fact that my work there was not perfect. Looking back, I can see so clearly the processes that I should have streamlined, the forms and documents I should have developed, the help and input I should have asked for and the projects I took on that may not have been the best fit for the business. These years have taught me a lot about myself, time management, collaboration and working smarter --- not harder. And with this growth, I am confident that as Canvas Weddings reopens, I will be able to serve my clients better than ever.
So, here we are! Canvas Weddings is open for business in the Hudson Valley, New York City and the greater tri-state area. Life is full, fresh and sweet, and I am so happy that Canvas Weddings is back and better than ever.
Thanks for following along.
